Our goal was to renovate the main floor living spaces of this 1940s cottage – and not lose its charm in the process. Most important to the client was to address the functionality and flow of the kitchen while working with the location of the original fireplace which sat in the middle of the living and dining room space and backed onto the kitchen stove. We also wanted to remove the outdated design elements from several renovations completed over more recent years, freshen the space using new paint colours and a more efficient and effective lighting layout – and create a new fireplace surround.
We worked with the original white oak flooring in the kitchen, living and dining room, repairing, sanding and applying a stain that would have been close to the original. We were fortunate to discover some beautiful fir planks under the carpet in the study off the master bedroom and the guest bedroom – these were stained a beautiful dark brown to compliment the accent detail in the main area oak flooring.
After discovering the original brick buried under the fireplace surround that was added on an earlier renovation, we decided to reintroduce the brick detail to the fireplace – and also use it for the stove backsplash. The warmth of the brick worked beautifully with both the new floors and the colour palette chosen for the cabinetry and walls – and made for a stunning focal point in both the living room and kitchen.
The result was a much more functional and contemporary space that while more open than before still maintained the charm and coziness of the original 1940’s cottage.
